SAMR: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification & Redefinition

Example 1:
Social Studies: Making a presention about Ancient Civilization using a bristol Board project and then showing family
Substitution: Make the presentation on a word document and make a picture collage
Augmentation: Students could make a animated video using Powtoon to describe the Ancient Civilization and have the cartoon characters speak on the students behalf.
Modification: Students can make a podcast of Ancient Civilization and instead of using pictures, they can use desciprtive words and imagery to "paint the picture" of what the family would look and act like for that time period
Redefinition:
Students can read about their historian on a digital textbbok and create an interview as if the historian were there in front of them answering the questions. This could be done using skye while the other student dressed up like the historian pretending to be that person.
Example 2:
Math: Learning Fractions: Show understanding of fractions on a worksheet by colouring in blocks
Substitution: students can use google sheet to represent the fraction
Augmentation: Students can search pictures that represent that fraction in non standard measurements ex. 1/2 would be represented by half a pizza
Modification: students can colour blocks on the whiteboard
Redefinition: students can play fruity fractions to test their knowledge about fractions
Example 3:
HPE: Phys Ed.: Learning how to hit a baseball by watching and listening to a Coach or Phys Ed instructor show you and then trying it yourself.
Substitution: The coach or phys ed instructor would create a video of them teaching the student how to hit a baseball and would use this as a lesson
Augmentation: The coach or phys ed instructor would create a video of them teaching the student and will add links to other training content such as videos and websites from other coaches or phys ed instructors
Modification: The coach or phys ed instructor would create videos on basic movements and techniques without baseball equipment. The student would then watch and listen to these videos, practice themselves, and then build up the skills until they are ready to use the equimpment
Redefinition: The student will watch the video instruction and then practice themselves. The instructor would then video the student hitting a baseball and will use the video to provide feedback on techniques and next steps Visual Arts: Drawing a picture using traditional brush, paint, paper. (Of course, there is a big difference between doing this “by hand” in the traditional manner and doing it digitally – digitally is by no means “better”, it is just different and opens up some interesting possibilities)
Substitution : Use a digital drawing/painting program (like MS Paint) to draw/paint a picture
Augmentation: Use a tool that allows the creation of your masterpiece to be “played back” (like Educreations, for example)
Modification: Pull a background image to use as a “canvas” – you could even scan something hand drawn and use that
Redefinition: Create artwork collaboratively using a collaborative online whiteboard (like Twiddla)
