Drama Activity Lesson Plan
Game title: Airport
Target Age: Grade 4 (10- 11 years old)
Purpose: Players will collaborate in the collaboration of where
How age appropriate?:
Social- children are independent, interested in what their friend’s think of them
Moral- highly competitive but believe in fairness, believe in right and wrong
Physical- have good body control, like more complicated tasks and like to play games in teams
Intellectual- have abstract thinking and reasoning
KSA Objectives:
Cognitive- The players will identify three instructions they would provide to the pilot that would effectively lead them to the end of the landing strip.
Psychomotor- The players will manipulate their movement and find their balance when stepping through the obstacles while in competition with the other teams
Affective- The players will value the importance following instructions and teamwork while solely relying on the control tower to ensure a safe landing before the other teams
Description:
With tape, outline two rectangles on the floor 4 ft by 12 ft (depending on space) that represent a landing strip
Collect a variety of objects (books, bags, shoes, bottles) and place items randomly in the rectangle spread out from each other to symbolize obstacles
Count off groups of 6 people:
Person 1: pilot (blindfold)
Person 2: control tower (guiding pilot)
Person 3 & 4: switch in both roles
Person 5 & 6: in charge of changing the obstacle
4) Pilot starts at one side of rectangle while control tower is at the other end leading the pilot through the obstacles without knocking them over using specific instructions (for example; left foot slide forward)
5) When/If pilot knocks over the obstacle, person 3 & 4 switch in the roles (pilot and control tower) and person 5 & 6 switch up the obstacles
Focus: Make a safe landing without knocking over or touching any of the obstacles
Organization: 6 pairs of shoes, 6 bags, 4 bottles, 6 books, 2 blindfolds = divided all by 2 for each rectangle and masking tape. Average group= 30 students
Side Coaching Prompts:
1. Right foot, lift until 90 degrees and step forward
2. Slide left foot until shoulder width apart
3. Three forward steps before the end line
Problem Solving:
Too many people waiting
People will rotate in to be a new pilot and control tower
Two people will be in charge of changing the obstacle when hit by the pilot
Two people could be in charge of distracting the pilot so they need to try to focus solely on the control tower’s voice.
2. Taking too long to complete the obstacle
1. Timer could be set to make it more difficult and allow as many people as possible to play the game
Reflection Question for Players:
Pilot: What was your strategy to help you go through the obstacle? What was your thought process?
Control tower: What was the challenge in leading the pilot through the maze?
Audience: What was going through your mind while you were observing the pilot and control tower?
Everyone: Was there a time where you felt like you did not know where you were going/ lost? Have you ever tried to lead someone who was completely dependent on you?
Was there a time where you had to focus on one voice in a room full of voices?
Coaching:
Is there changes you would make to the game to make it harder or easier?
Stop, Start or Continue
Positive Reinforcement:
Pilot: Your moves were in sync to the instructions of the control tower
Control tower: Your side coaching was very specific and the updates were continuous
Audience/ Change up players: The obstacle was set up very creatively and strategically
